Bay Laurel is an aromatic plant, that is widely used in cooking as a spice, while also being utilized for medicinal purposes. -Bay leaves, rich in phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, tannins, lignans, and sesquiterpenes, are considered to have anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-diabetic effects. -Evidence suggests that consumption of bay leaves decoction may contribute to the metabolism of blood lipids, possibly due to its antioxidant compounds, such as flavonoids. -Bay leaves tea may potentially lead to an increase of HDL cholesterol and regulation of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in the blood, thereby providing partial support, and protecting against cardiovascular diseases. -The anti-oxidative activity of bay leaves, which are rich in phenolic compounds, may exert a neuroprotective effect against neuro-degenerative diseases related to oxidative stress. -The decoction of bay leaves is considered to be potentially beneficial in the protection against type-2 diabetes, as it not only regulates the lipid profile but reportedly leads to a reduction of blood glucose and an improvement in insulin metabolism. -Bay leaves’ extract is considered to have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects, due to the phenolic compounds it contains. It can protect against inflammatory reactions caused by bacterial infections. -Among the sesquiterpenes contained in bay leaves, magnolialide is a compound thought to be able to confer protection against hypersensitivity responses such as atopic dermatitis and asthma.
